No, I'm not a pilot. This is a restored 60's era helmet from the VA-46 squadron that was onboard the USS Forrestal at the time of the tragic fire. Obviously the mask is not period correct but the helmet and tartan stripes are a very close reproduction. I have posted this because i am very honored to say that my Dad served aboard Forrestal in 1963/64. I also have a very good friend who was a A4 "Scooter" pilot that was there the day of the fire. I display this helmet in remembrance of all the brave Sailors who were injured and those who lost their lives that tragic day of July 29, 1967.
The following are official & de-classified Navy photos that my Dad brought home with him when he got out of the Navy in 1964. He served aboard the USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier in 63/64. Don't forget to check out the link at the bottom for more photos.
James Vincent Forrestal (February 15, 1892 – May 22, 1949). Forrestal was the last Cabinet-level United States Secretary of the Navy and the first United States Secretary of Defense.
